Common Furnace Problems Homeowners Experience

Heating systems rarely fail without warning. In many cases, homeowners notice changes in performance before the system stops working completely. Recognizing these issues early can help prevent more serious repairs and restore comfort faster.

Furnace Blowing Cold Air

If your furnace is running but only blowing cool air, the problem could be related to the thermostat, ignition system, dirty filters, or airflow restrictions. A professional diagnosis can identify the cause and restore proper heating.

Uneven Heating Throughout the Home

If some rooms feel warm while others stay cold, your heating system may be dealing with airflow issues, duct leaks, thermostat problems, or an aging blower motor. Uneven heating is a common sign that the system needs service.

Furnace Constantly Turning On and Off

Short cycling can place unnecessary strain on your system and increase energy costs. This may be caused by a clogged filter, overheating, thermostat issues, or improper system operation.

Strange Noises from the Furnace

Banging, rattling, squealing, or buzzing sounds often indicate a mechanical issue within the system. Loose parts, worn components, or airflow problems can all lead to unusual noises that should be inspected before they get worse.

Weak Airflow from Vents

Poor airflow can make it difficult for your home to stay warm and comfortable. Common causes include dirty filters, blower motor problems, blocked vents, or ductwork issues.

Rising Heating Bills

If your heating costs are climbing without a clear reason, your system may be running inefficiently due to wear, poor airflow, or hidden mechanical problems. Repairing the issue can often restore efficiency and reduce strain on the system.

Heating Repair FAQs

Why is my furnace blowing cold air?

A furnace may blow cold air due to thermostat issues, clogged filters, ignition problems, or airflow restrictions. A professional technician can inspect the system and identify the cause.

How long do furnaces typically last?

Most furnaces last 15 to 20 years, depending on maintenance, usage, and installation quality.

How long should a residential air conditioning system last?

Most residential air conditioning systems last between 12 and 15 years depending on usage, maintenance, and installation quality. Regular maintenance can extend the life of the system and help it run more efficiently.

What should I do if my furnace stops working?

Check the thermostat, air filter, and power supply first. If the system still isn’t operating properly, a professional HVAC technician can diagnose the issue safely.

Is it better to repair or replace my furnace?

If the furnace is relatively new and the repair is minor, repairing the system is often the best option. Older systems with frequent issues may benefit from replacement.

Why is my heater making strange noises?

Unusual heating system noises can be caused by loose parts, worn components, ignition problems, airflow restrictions, or issues with the blower motor. Strange sounds should be inspected early to help prevent more serious system damage.

How quickly can heating repair be scheduled?

Scheduling availability can vary depending on the season and demand, but many heating issues can be diagnosed and repaired quickly once a technician evaluates the system. Calling early often helps prevent a complete loss of heat.

WHAT OUR CLIENTS ARE SAYING

Marcela Braga

Our system is very old (30 plus years) and it went out right after the snow storm. I called MaxAir and I believe within 3 hours their tech, Drew and his assistant were on the way. They were very careful and mindful about wearing booties over their shoes in the house, and took care of the electrical issue for us. Drew and his assistant, sorry I forgot his name, were awesome and so kind, they explained everything to me and were pretty quick as well.

Zack Lindsey

I called on the 16th of January about getting a split heating unit put in, and ask for a ballpark price. They came over later that day and let me know that the co.sent me the wrong unit and than showed me what I needed, well we got it worked out and they showed up one day after the new unit arrived, did the install ( everything except running the electric) had to wait for them, but everything worth the wait, not just the professional work that they did but the speed it was all done. Everything was clean when work was done and it looks fantastic and works just as well. My shed is now warm, and well all of max air people are very nice and well good to talk with, I can not say the price was to high but for the work that was done and how it looks, also knowing that myself and wife can rest assured that it was done professionally and they will stand behind their work!
